The Cay by TheodoreTaylor. The book was provided to the students at the end of the school year. If you are new to the school please call the school office and a copy will be provided. The material in this book will be used for both the Language Arts class and the Social Studies classes in the begining of the school year.

The student will be asked to submit a book report during the first week of school. The format for this report will be

  • Decorated cover .... Page 1
  • Breif description of the main characters ....Page 2
  • Book report on the novel not to exceed one page .... Page 3
  • Social questions addressed in the novel .... Page 4
  • Evaluation and recommendations regarding the reading material .... Page 5
This report will be collected by the Language Arts teachers. It can be handwritten (legibly and neatly) in ink or typed on a computer double spaced in TYPE size 14, Times Roman font .

Grade 7
Two books are required reading for the Language Arts class. Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days and William Gibson's play The Miracle Worker. These books were given to the students at the end of last school year. If you are new to the school please call the school office to receive a copy of these book. In addtion to the books the students were given a vocabulary list for the Jules Verne novel and 2 vocabulary lists and an Act l Study Guide for the play. For each of the vocabulary words the student is required to write the part of speech of the given word and the meaning. The vocabulary may need to be looked up in a dictionary.

Grade 8
Three books are required. The books were given to the students at the end of last school year. If you are new to the school please call the school office to receive a copy of the required material.
  • And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. Students need to take notes on their strip of 10 paper dolls. Thename and characteristics of each of the 10 characters goes on one side. Fred Narracott and Mr. Morris are not to be noted. A poem is writtenearly in the book about 10 little Indians dying. As each character dies the stanza of the poem that is similar to the death should be writtten on the back side of the character's doll. The person you suspect as the murderer should also be noted at the timeof the character's death.
  • Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt. 10 paper dolls will sao be used for notes while reading this book. A blue ink pen and a pencil will be needed. On the first doll write how the Civil War begins: Who is involved, where,why, when and on what page in the book is the information found. With blue ink note a name of a general or soldier in the union Army on the remaining nine dolls and what battle he was involved in with the page number on which this information is found. On the back side use pencil and note the names of 9 soldiers and generals in the Confederate Army and what battle he was involved in with the page number on which this information can be found. On the back of the beginning of the Civil War note write parallel information about the ending of the Civil War.
  • Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. As you read this book think of Douglass's five senses and note a memorable sight, noise, words heard, taste, smell, and two memorable thoughts and two memorable utterances of this man. Also make note of Wendell Philips and William Lloyd Garrison. Where do their words appear in this book and what is their opinion of Frederick Douglass?

Each book has vocabulary lists. The student is required to write the part of speach and the meaning of each word
